Algarve 7-Day Itinerary: Best Things to Do

The Algarve had been on our bucket list for a while, and when we finally made it, it was even more magical than we had imagined. From golden beaches and hidden caves to charming towns and fresh seafood, every day was an adventure.

We stayed at Tivoli Carvoeiro Resort, a stunning clifftop hotel overlooking the Atlantic, which became our little slice of paradise. Waking up to those ocean views, hearing the waves crash against the cliffs—it was the perfect base for our Algarve exploration.

Here’s a day-by-day breakdown of our trip, how we traveled around, and our favorite experiences along the way!

Day 1: Arriving in Carvoeiro & Chasing the First Sunset

After landing at Faro Airport, we picked up our rental car and drove about 50 minutes to Carvoeiro. As soon as we reached Tivoli Carvoeiro, we were blown away by the location—perched on the edge of a cliff with panoramic ocean views.

A Magical Sunset at Praia da Marinha

After settling in, we couldn’t wait to start exploring. It’s just a 10-minute drive to Praia da Marinha, often called one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The view from the clifftop was stunning—golden rocks rising above the deep blue Atlantic. At first, I was nervous about climbing, but with Kaushik’s encouragement, I took a deep breath, found my footing, and made it up.

The view was absolutely stunning—golden cliffs rising above the deep blue Atlantic, with waves crashing below. We walked along the edge, stopping often to take pictures and enjoy the view. Eventually, we found a quiet spot to sit and relax. The ocean breeze, the sound of the waves, and the warm sun made it a perfect and peaceful moment.

First Dinner in Carvoeiro

For our first meal, we headed to Vimar Restaurant and Bar (just a 5-minute walk from our hotel).

Kaushik went for grilled sea bass, and he still talks about how fresh and juicy it was! I had the garlic butter prawns, and they were heavenly. We ended the night with a glass of Vinho Verde—a crisp Portuguese wine that quickly became a favorite.

Day 2: Exploring Benagil Cave

Benagil Cave Boat Tour

Stunning Benagil Cave!

On our second day in Carvoeiro, we had something special planned—a Benagil Cave boat tour ! After a quick breakfast, we set off from Portimão Marina, eager to see the stunning coastline. As we cruised along, we passed charming villages like Ferragudo, breathtaking cliffs, and hidden beaches that could only be accessed by boat. It was truly a sight to behold!

Arriving at the Benagil Cave, we couldn’t believe our eyes. The famous sunlit skylight above and the clear turquoise water below felt like we were stepping into a dream! We spent some time soaking in the beauty before heading back to the marina.

💡 Pro Tip: While we considered kayaking, the boat tour was a much safer and more convenient choice due to the strong currents. However, if you do decide to kayak or swim, be sure to bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, water shoes for rocky areas, and a waterproof phone case to capture the moment!

If you’re in Carvoeiro, don’t miss this amazing boat tour. It’s the perfect way to experience the Algarve’s natural wonders and create memories that will last a lifetime!

Sunset Dinner with an Ocean View

We decided to dine at One Restaurant, inside our hotel. Watching the sunset over the cliffs while enjoying our meal made it one of the best dinner experiences of the trip.

Day 3: Exploring Algar Seco & Carvoeiro’s Hidden Gem

The day started with a relaxed vibe as we set out to explore more of the Algarve’s stunning coastline. Our first stop? Algar Seco, a breathtaking rock formation on the east side of Carvoeiro. To get there, we followed the Carvoeiro Boardwalk, a scenic wooden pathway along the cliffs, offering panoramic ocean views at every step. The fresh sea breeze, the sound of waves crashing below, and the golden cliffs glowing in the sun—it was the perfect way to ease into the day. There’s a small parking area at the top, and judging by the number of cars, we weren’t the only ones excited to see this place!

In front of A Boneca, Algar Seco!

One of Algar Seco’s hidden gems is A Boneca (The Doll), a small cave with two natural windows that frame the ocean like a painting. Of course, we had to check out Boneca Bar, the little restaurant right beside it. The view? Absolutely spectacular. The food? Well… let’s just say the ocean was the highlight of our meal. We had burgers, chicken breast, and fries, but for the price, it was pretty underwhelming. Still, with the sound of the waves and the salty breeze in the air, it was a great place to just sit back and enjoy the moment.

Day 4: The Seven Hanging Valleys Hike & Secret Beaches

Hiking One of the Most Beautiful Trails in Portugal

Seven Hanging Valleys Trail at Algarve
The breathtaking Seven Hanging Valleys – nature’s masterpiece!

We’re not hardcore hikers, but we couldn’t miss the famous Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. After breakfast, we laced up our shoes and set off on the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, a 6 km hike from Praia da Marinha to Praia do Vale de Centeanes. It’s supposed to take about 2.5 hours, but let’s be real—we stopped every few minutes just to take in the jaw-dropping views. Cliffs dropping straight into the ocean, hidden caves, and that deep blue Atlantic stretching forever… honestly, how were we supposed to just walk past all that?

We went in April, which turned out to be the perfect time—pleasant weather and fewer crowds. In summer, especially from mid-July to mid-September, it gets extremely hot, making the hike much tougher. If you’re planning to do this trail, an early morning start is best. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water to stay hydrated!

One of the coolest stops was Praia do Carvalho, a hidden beach you can only reach by walking through a tunnel carved into the rocks. It felt like entering a secret world! After finishing the hike, we were too tired to walk all the way back, so we took the easy way out—Uber to the rescue! Honestly, by that point, our legs were thanking us. Would we do it again? Absolutely. But maybe with even more snack breaks next time!

Day 5: Dolphin Watching & Exploring Albufeira

Morning: Dolphin Watching

We grabbed an Uber to Albufeira Marina for a dolphin-watching tour, hoping to get lucky. And guess what? Within 20 minutes, dolphins! We spotted a pod in the distance, gracefully gliding through the waves. Such an incredible sight! You can book your dolphin-watching boat tour in advance through GetYourGuide—just like we did!

The tour didn’t stop there. We cruised along the stunning coastline, exploring hidden sea caves tucked into the cliffs. The mix of golden rock formations and crystal-clear water was straight-up breathtaking. It was one of those “Is this real life?” moments.

Afternoon: Exploring Albufeira

After the tour, we wandered through Albufeira’s Old Town, a maze of colorful streets, tiled buildings, and cozy cafés. I treated myself to two pastel de natas (because one is never enough). Meanwhile, Kaushik fell in love with Praia dos Pescadores, a vibrant beach lined with restaurants, perfect for just sitting back and soaking in the views.

Dolphins, caves, good food, and beach views—Albufeira, you won us over!

Day 6: Faro Beach & City Tour

We decided to spend our last full day in Faro, about 50 minutes from Carvoeiro.

Faro Cathedral

We spent our last morning in Faro Beach, a long, sandy stretch with calm waters and a laid-back vibe. It was the perfect place to just relax, listen to the waves, and soak in the Algarve sun one last time. No rush, no plans—just pure vacation bliss.

Later, we wandered into Faro’s Old Town, entering through the Arco da Vila, a grand stone arch that felt like stepping back in time. The cobbled streets led us to Sé de Faro, a stunning cathedral with panoramic views from the top—the perfect spot to take in the city one last time.

For our lunch, we found a hidden gem, Tasca do Ricky, where we indulged in comforting Portuguese flavors. A perfect way to end our time in Faro!

Lost in the charm of Faro’s old town!

Day 7: Goodbye Algarve

On our last morning, we enjoyed one last ocean-view breakfast at our hotel, savoring the moment before heading back. The drive to Faro Airport wasn’t just any ride—it was a scenic farewell, with coastal views and golden landscapes making it hard to say goodbye. What a way to end an unforgettable trip!

As we boarded our flight, we both agreed—the Algarve wasn’t just a vacation. It was an experience we’d never forget.

Food That’ll Make You Want to Move to Portugal

One thing’s for sure—you will not go hungry in the Algarve! Portuguese food is a flavor explosion, especially if you love seafood.

🍽️ Grilled Sardines – Simple, smoky, and packed with flavor.
🍲 Cataplana de Marisco – A rich, garlicky seafood stew that will melt in your mouth.
🥧 Pastéis de Nata – Buttery, creamy, slightly caramelized heaven.

👉 Best restaurants we loved:

Vimar Restaurant and Bar – Grilled Sardines & Grilled Sole + great service.
O Camilo – Fresh seafood + breathtaking views.
Àbabuja – Authentic flavors in a cozy setting.

Final Thoughts: The Algarve Is Pure Magic

We’ve traveled to many places, but the Algarve holds a special kind of magic. It’s peaceful yet exciting, breathtaking but relaxing, luxurious while still feeling warm and welcoming.

The cliffs, beaches, caves, and sunsets will stay with you forever.

If you’re looking for a destination that will steal your heart, this is it.
