How to Get to Nusa Penida: A Simple Guide
Getting to Nusa Penida is simple and exciting! A 40-minute speedboat ride will take you straight to this beautiful island. All speedboats and ferries depart from Sanur Harbor in Bali.
Getting to the harbor is easy—it’s just an hour’s drive from Bali Airport. You can book tickets online in advance. We booked ours through 12Go and GetYourGuide, which worked perfectly. Once you book, you’ll need to collect your tickets from the ferry company’s office at the harbor.
If you prefer, you can also buy tickets directly at the harbor. A round-trip ticket costs around $20 per person, and there are plenty of ferry companies with different departure times every day. All ferries leave from Sanur Port, so it’s convenient.
Nusa Penida has a few harbors where the boats arrive. Most fast boat companies dock at Toyapakeh Harbor, also known as Banjar Nyuh. This port is close to Toyapakeh village and is one of the main entry points to the island.
Another option is booking a day tour to Nusa Penida through a Bali-based tour company. This is a great choice if you’re short on time or want to avoid the hassle of planning.

If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you’re planning to stay a few nights on Nusa Penida—and that’s a fantastic idea! Spending two or three days here lets you enjoy the island at a relaxed pace. We stayed for 4 days, but honestly, it felt like it wasn’t enough.
There are plenty of resorts and hotels on the island, mostly located in the west and north. We stayed at the Adiwana Warnakali Resort in an Ocean View Suite, and the experience was incredible. The view from our room was breathtaking, and the service and food were excellent. We highly recommend this property! And we used Booking.com to book our accommodations in advance for a hassle-free experience.

Renting a scooter or motorbike is very popular here, but you’ll need to be a skilled rider to navigate the steep hills, sharp turns, and blind spots safely. Always wear a helmet and stay cautious while riding. Renting a motorbike typically costs $5–$6 USD per day, including a full tank of gas.
If you’re not comfortable riding, you can rent a car with a driver, which is what we did. Many hotels offer private car tours or can arrange one for you. It’s a stress-free way to explore the island while enjoying the views. Renting a car with a driver for a day (typically 8 hours) costs around $50 to $60 USD.

Perfect for breakfast! Located near Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong, this spot serves amazing smoothie bowls packed with tropical fruits—just what you need to stay energized in the heat. Their beverage menu is also impressive.

Located on the east coast near Diamond Beach, this ocean-view restaurant quickly became our favorite for lunch. The food is fresh (especially the fish), and the quality is excellent. Don’t miss the Nyat Nyat fish!

A great spot for dinner and drinks, with incredible sunset views. The food and cocktails here are top-notch, making it the perfect place to unwind.

Is Nusa Penida Safe?
Nusa Penida is generally very safe for all types of travelers. The island is constantly developing, though some areas are still underdeveloped. The locals are welcoming, and violent crime is virtually unheard of. Small theft or petty crime is rare, but it’s always a good idea to take normal precautions.
Roads
Be cautious on the narrow, winding roads. Some areas have poor road conditions, and you’ll need to be comfortable riding a motorcycle to get around.
Swimming
Be careful of the ocean currents, especially at Kelingking Beach, which is known for dangerous waves. Swimming and paddling are not recommended here.
Cliffs
Some areas lack safety railings, so be extra cautious around cliffs. There have been incidents where tourists have fallen while taking photos near the edges.
Snorkeling
The currents at Mangrove can be strong, making it unsafe for snorkeling in some spots.
Night Travel
It’s best to avoid traveling alone at night for safety reasons.
